What is Omicron?
The newest of the COVID-19 variants, B.1.1.529, was reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 24, 2021. This new variant was found in specimens taken in Botswana on November 11, 2021, and in South Africa on November 14, 2021.
The B.1.1.529 Omicron was named and designated as a Variant of Concern (VOC) by WHO on November 26, 2021. The United States announced Omicron as a Variant of Concern on November 30, 2021, and the first confirmed case of Omicron in the United States was confirmed on December 1, 2021.
The omicron form may be more easily transmitted than other variants, such as delta. However, it is unclear whether omicron causes more severe disease. People who have been fully vaccinated are prone to develop breakthrough infections and transfer the virus to others. The COVID-19 vaccinations, on the other hand, are likely to be useful in preventing serious illness. Some monoclonal antibody treatments may be less successful as a result of this mutation.
Is COVID-19 Vaccination Effective Against Omicron, the Newest of the COVID-19 Variants?

“The second big unknown is whether or not this has immune escape, meaning if vaccines and prior infection will confer the same amount of protection that they currently do or will confer some less protection. The third one is we don’t know what the severity of this is — if this is more likely to land people in the hospital than prior variants were. However, as we’re looking at this story as it unfolds, the number of mutations makes it plausible that any of these could change. And we need to be watching this carefully.”Dr. John O’Horo
